Since 2012, Ryan has supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with a cycling/running event he holds every year in his home state of Minnesota. All of the funds raised by the St. Jude Ride & 5K Run, held in July, go directly to the hospital.
In 2005, when Ryan was 15, his life was forever changed when he lost his grandmother to cancer. Having a hard time grieving her loss, Ryan vowed to do everything in his power to join the fight to find a cure for cancer, while also helping those in the midst of their own battle.
In 2012, Ryan went to visit St. Jude’s headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee. It was a visit that served as another life-changing moment and inspired his commitment to this philanthropic mission.
“Touring the hospital was very insightful, but also hard to see in some ways,” Ryan shared. “Young kids were battling cancer and fighting for their lives. But, one thing I noticed was that, despite their circumstances, kids were smiling, and their parents were right there to support them. Friendly nurses worked non-stop around the clock. These kids were in great hands, and it was so good to see. Family expenses were paid for, treatments were specially tailored to each patient, and doctors were working 24/7 to find a cure. I was so inspired that I knew right then and there that this was a place for me to get behind and support.”
That’s when the St. Jude Ride & 5K Run seed was planted. Later that summer it came to fruition, as the MN Major River-to-River Ride, and has been held every year since. The event has raised over 1 million dollars since its inception, with every dollar going directly to the hospital, and has no plans to slow down.
“It takes everyone’s effort in this fight to help find a cure,” Ryan continued. “And it all matters.”
Ryan’s mission is to keep fighting to find a cure and to help save lives. When you support RD Coffee, you’re supporting St. Jude, too.
